Our friends at Basilippo care intensely about their land, their heritage and the olive oil they produce. This family olive grove located between the towns of El Viso and Maierena Del Alcor just outside of Sevilla produces exceptional olives that are pressed on-site just hours after harvest. The resulting organic cold-pressed olive oil has a full, balanced flavor perfect for salads, pastas or for dipping with fresh bread.
Basilippo organic extra virgin olive oil is a blend of fruity Arbequina and smooth Manzanilla oils. These two olives have a pleasant herbal flavor, with hints of tomato and artichoke. It is a delicious medium intensity oil with a lot of versatility in the kitchen.
When we visited, we watched as each bottle was filled, charged with Nitrogen and numbered by hand – this is truly an artisan, small production oil! The beautiful label features a drawing of the grandfather looking out over the fields as he used to do every morning. The beautiful flowers represent those planted by the grandmother in their garden.
Basilippo is an ancient name for the area, meaning “village of the moon forest.” Olive trees have grown on this land since the Bronze Age, when it was known as a holy tree. Today the company, founded by the Morillo family, honors this ancient tradition, but also uses the most modern olive pressing equipment to preserve this delicious oil at peak condition.
