Some say that French wines are the standard to which producers in all other countries aspire. Traditions date back three thousand years to the Phoenician occupation of Provence. The Romans, followed by the many religious orders, have also played an important role in the development of the many varied wines of France. French wines can be among the most difficult to understand because of their complex classification system, which varies from region to region.
